Q: What types of Hair Extensions and Hair Replacements are offered by Glam?

A: We are proud to offer Hairdreams, Greatlengths, Ultress-Gemtress, Platinum, Micro-links, So- Cap, Cinderella, Hot Heads, Evolve, Megahair, Microline by Hairdreams, Giovonni, Clip Ins, Kliks, Seamless, and Lace front units, covering hair loss levels 1-3.

Hairdreams Extensions

Q: What are Hairdreams Extensions?

A: The Hairdreams system is currently the “Creme de la creme” of hair extensions and is known as the best hair extension system worldwide! Hairdreams has the smallest fixing points available. The fixing points or bonds, are available in normal, medium, small and extra small, and are all pre-tipped. The Hairdreams strands are micro-fine and considerably smaller than ALL traditional extension systems.

Thanks to these very fine strands, the extension hair looks natural and beautiful, as if it is your very own hair.  All Hairdreams are available in bundles of 25 bonds/strands. The hair is available in Basic and Special, to accommodate whatever budget you desire to have the lavish hair of your dreams.

Q: What's the difference between Basic hair and Special hair?

A: Price and quality! Basic hair has been slow treated over a period of weeks to provide the highest shine, color and durability. This hair is known as Indonesian or Indian Temple Hair. The original color of the hair starts out black or dark brown. The hair is then processed over a period of weeks to reach the final color. (Basic hair is the same quality that “Great lengths” [Indian Temple Hair] offers). Basic hair comes in several colors and three lengths: 12″, 16″, 20″ this hair can be applied one time and will last up to 6 months. The Basic hair costs about 20% less than the Special Hair.

Special hair is European hair. This hair is normally a very light color at the beginning, so the processing doesn’t take as long. Its available in several lengths which include: 10″, 14″, 18″, 22″ this hair can be applied 3 times lasting you at the very least 1.5 years.

Q: How are the Hairdreams Extensions applied?

A: The extensions are applied 1/3 inch from the scalp, using a special thermo plast bonding system throughout the sides and back. We do not place bonds on top of the head because they can be seen. When they are placed too close to the top of the head, they may be too heavy for the fragile hair on the top of the head.  However, we do offer the Seamless Extension method for the top of your head.

Q: How long do Hairdreams Extensions remain in place?

A:  The extensions can last up to 6 months, depending on how fast your own hair grows and how well you maintain your extensions. After 6 months, the extensions should be removed and if desired, retipped.

Q: How are Hairdreams Extensions maintained?

A: With the exquisite Hairdreams system you will need maintenance every 2 1/2 months.  Falling hairs that become entangled in the bonds must be trimmed away.  This will help avoid the formation of mats and tangles. You will need to brush your hair every day and shampoo at least 2-3 days a week.  To maintain your extension bonds and natural hair looking its best, shampooing, conditioning, proper brushing techniques, and scheduling maintenance appointments must be done.

Q: Can I reuse the Hairdreams Extension hair?

A: Yes, always recycle everything! You can use the Special Hair up to 3 times. Expect 12 weeks for the hair to be shipped, re-tipped, and reconditioned. Some clients prefer to buy 2 sets of hair extensions, so they never have to go a day without their gorgeous locks!

Strand by Strand Extensions

Q: What is strand by strand?

A: Strand by strand method is where we use a keratin protein polymer bonding agent and use a tong-like tool to fuse the hair extension hair to your own hair. We offer many brands for the strand by strand method including but not limited to Hairdreams, Great Lengths, SoCap, and Cinderella hair extensions. Strand by strand method will give you the captivating length that you’ve always dreamed of.

Q: How many strands/bonds come in a bundle?

A: Depending on the name brand, Some brands come in 10, 50 or 20. This may confuse the customer if we say 25 bonds in a bundle when in fact it might be 20 or 50.

Q: What is fusion?

A: Fusion extensions are attached to your own hair with a low temperature protein molded bond. Fusion hair extensions are more of an “old school” method. We would create the bond ourselves in salon.  They have a round shape and blend very well with your hair. We use a high-quality Italian hair. These hair extensions can last up to three months with proper maintenance. Also available in Pressed Relaxed textures sometimes called Yaki.

Q: What is bonding?

A: Adhesive is applied to the extension hair. The adhesive goes directly onto your hair and skin on your scalp. Bonding usually is done with track hair in which the latex adhesive is applied. This is not a high quality method of hair extensions. For some it could last for two weeks and for others it loosens up after the first shampoo. This is great for a special occasion. However, the quality of care available for bonding is not up to Enhanced by Modern Enhancements standards. We do not recommend this option but upon request we can offer this method for short term use.

Q: Why is strand by strand (thermal molding, bonding or fusion) better than sewing or weaving the extension in?

A: With the strand by strand method the extension hair is individually fused to your own strands of hair. This allows the hair to be free flowing and blow in the wind like your own hair. It gives you the most natural and comfortable style for an extended period of time. With sew-ins or weaving the hair is first braided into very tight braids, also known as “corn rows” to your scalp. This creates a lot of tension on your hair and scalp which can be painful and after long periods of use can cause a traction alopecia. It is also very hard to get underneath the sew-in to make sure that the scalp is clean. This is never a good method to use especially on very fine hair that easily breaks. After the hair is braided, the stylist would use a cheaper type of hair known as track hair and would attach the track by sewing it into the braid. This adds extra weight to your own hair that already has too much tension from braiding. This method can last longer with certain hair types but typically shouldn’t be left in more than a week.  Strand by strand is safe, long lasting, luxurious and will not cause unnecessary tension on the hair.

Q: How many bonds does it take to do a full head of extensions?

A: Depending on the amount of hair that you currently have (thin or thick) the current cut (blunt or layered) will determine how many bundles it will take.  However, for most people it typically takes  25 to 50 bonds for thickness and 125-175 bonds for a full head of thickness and length. These numbers will vary depending on the desired look. You may need more even after the first application depending on your head shape and haircut.

Q: What are Megahair Extensions?

A: Megahair is the original “Strand by Strand” hair extension method, that was invented by Sal Mega, in the early 80’s. This is the method Wynonna Judd, Heart, Jodi Whatley, and Meg Ryan used back in the 80’s.

Megahair is a single strand bond method, known as “strand-by-strand” or “fusion.” There are approximately 25 strands of extension hair added to about 12 strands of your own hair strands. The bonds are held together with a natural keratin/protein adhesive. This method is about half the price of the newest methods of strand by strand extensions.

Q: Why is the Megahair strand by strand method about half the price of Hairdreams or Greatlengths?

A: Megahair is not pre-tipped Russian hair. It is Bulk Remy Italian hair. The adhesive only lasts about 3-4 months versus, 4-6 months with Hairdreams. The Megahair bonding agent is not as strong as other pre-bonded hair extensions. This causes more shedding and does not last as long as other methods. Megahair requires touch ups monthly, to tighten the bonds. Hairdreams and Greatlengths maintenance is required less often which works best for those with busy schedules! We personally prefer Hairdreams, because it can be reused.

Q: How long does Megahair Extensions hair last?

A: As with any other extension system, it depends on how fast your own hair grows. There is no way to determine an exact period of time. The average time is anywhere from 3-4 months depending on how the hair is maintained. Megahair may be reused the same day.

Hair grows 1/2″ to 1” every month. Therefore, the re-growth starts to interfere with your every day styling routine. In-addition, every day shedding causes the bond section to become unbalanced, which could cause tension on your natural hair.  For this reason, reattaching the bonds, at least every 4 months is strongly recommended.

Q: Will Megahair Extensions come out or shed?

A: Yes, you will lose an occasional bond, maybe 3 per month. As far as shedding; if you follow proper maintenance such as: shampooing with proper products, never going an extended period of time with a wet head (air drying), no oils,  following with a cool blast of air after hot blow drying, no oily hair product use (i.e. spray shine, shine serum, Etc.), shedding should be very minimal.  However, expect to shed approximately 20% of your extension hair by the end of your wearing time. Remember, Megahair is attached semi-permanently, using all natural adhesive. So, the bond will eventually break down. You may want to add a few extra bonds or more each month during your touch up’s, to maintain the fullness. If you are concerned about shedding, then go with the Hairdreams or Great lengths method.

Q: What are micro links?

A: This is a gentle attachment method that does not involve glues or bonding agents. The grommets or micro cylinders are used to attach the strands using a special technique to your own hair.  These are easy to install and easy to remove. This  is a strong and safe method that will not damage your hair and can last up to six months or longer with proper maintenance. Your own hair is pulled through grommets in small pieces with a tool that looks like a crochet hook then the pre-tipped hair is put inside the link and it is squeezed tight. The hair is removed with pliers to open the link. Typically Great Lengths hair is used along with the micro-links to ensure that you are still receiving very high quality beautiful hair. This hair can immediately be reused.

SeamlessTape (cold method)

Q: What are Seamless Hair Extensions?

A: Seamless hair, also known as the “tape in” method is great to add extra body to the top of your hair. They can be used to create facial framing or extra layers where other types of extensions would not typically be placed. We offer many brands of seamless hair extensions, but Ultratress is our top seller. Ultratress is by far the most gorgeous and discreet type of seamless extensions on the market. This particular seamless extension has hair sewn into the actual seam for the most natural and discreet look. These come in 15” strips across which allows us to cut and customize for more precise placement. You have a choice of 14″ or 18″ in length. The top of this seam also has a much smaller width at the base so it is perfect to use with fine hair. Other brands of seamless extensions that we offer are Hairdreams Quikkies and HotHeads. These seamless extensions are precut into smaller tabs and can be applied quicker than some other methods of hair extensions. All of our seamless hair extensions are attached using a special tape adhesive made specifically to be used in the hair.

Q: What type of hair is Seamless Extensions?

A: Indian or Indonesian, known as Indian Temple Hair. This hair starts out as black Indian hair and is then slow processed over a period of weeks to reach the final color. Available in several colors, lengths (14″ and 18″) and textures-straight, body wave and tight curl.

Q: How are Seamless Extensions maintained?

A:  Every 4-8 weeks you will need to have the Seamless extensions removed and placed closer to the scalp. Expect 20-90 minutes for this appointment, depending on the number of Seamless extensions you have. Proper brushing, shampooing and conditioning along with scheduled maintenance appointments will maintain the Seamless extensions and your natural hair together.

Q: Can I color or perm the Seamless Extension hair?

A: There are several textures and colors available. Therefore, it’s best to match the color you desire before color change. Because the hair has been processed and sterilized, we advise not doing any chemical treatments on it, as it can be ruined easily or may not come out the color you desire. If you choose to do this color alteration, please do a test strip or better yet, have one of our Stylists color it for you.

Integration Units

Q: What are integration units?

A: An Integration unit is a hairpiece used for people with extreme thinning on the top of the head, or those who desire a super glam look.  The hair piece is attached by using small grommets to fasten it to your hair by pulling your own hair through small holes on the underside of the unit. We offer several types of integration units. We would determine the type of integration unit that would be best for you by the amount of hair loss you have and the style that you would like to achieve. At Enhanced we offer New Choice Integration, Hairdreams Microline, Hot Heads and the newest integration on the market, the Evolve Volumizer. The volumizer allows you to have a dazzling style with more body than some of the older brands.

Clip In Extensions

Q: What are clip in extensions?

A: Clip in extensions are an easy and very affordable way to add instant hotness to your look and you can apply these yourself at home. If you are wanting an extended use of hair extensions, the clips may not be the answer for your hair needs. Wearing them on a daily basis can cause too much strain or tension on your own natural hair! At Glam we can make customized clip in extensions.

Q: How often will I need to have maintenance done?

A: Depending on the type of hair extensions that you have, maintenance appointments will vary. With Bonded hair extensions you will need to come to the salon for a Tidy Up maintenance appointment every 6 weeks. With the Seamless hair extensions you will need to come in every 4-6 weeks to have them removed, have new adhesive placed on them and have them reattached. For Fusion extensions you will need to come in every 3-4 weeks to have them touched up or “resealed”.

Q: What is a Tidy Cut or a Tidy Up appointment?

A: During a Tidy-up appointment, we sort through your hair and trim away any hair that has naturally fallen from the scalp. This occurs during the natural shedding process. Usually, when hair sheds it is combed out or is shampooed out during showering.  However, when you have bonded hair extensions the loose hair becomes trapped inside of the bond. These little hairs will begin to sprig out from the bond and they often catch onto each other which leads to tangling. If you do not have the proper tidy-up maintenance these tangles could lead to matting which is unhealthy for your hair as well as uncomfortable. This appointment is usually a quick 30 minute service.

Q: Will a Tidy Cut damage or shorten my own hair?

A: A tidy cut will never damage or shorten the length of your own hair. This is a preventative maintenance appointment that will prevent damage and help to keep the integrity of your hair. When we are trimming around the bond we are very careful to only trim away hairs that have already naturally shed from your scalp.

Home Care Needed

Q: Can Hair extensions be uncomfortable?

A: 95% of clients say they never felt anything, 5% have said they were uncomfortable the first three days however, after that they didn’t even remember that they were there.

Q: How do I shampoo my new hair extensions?

A: Shampoo your gorgeous extension hair in one direction from top to bottom.  Never shampoo your hair upside down in the sink or over the side of the bath tub. Only use shampoos and conditioners that are for dry hair. Remember, this hair was cut off of someone else and it will need extra moisture.

Q: What types of products should I use with my hair extensions?

A: We have an array of hair extensions safe products . HairDreams has their own line. We also carry the most alluring brands such as Kerastase, Unite and Moroccan Oil. These are all recommended brands and safe to use on extension hair.  You can find the particular products by those vendors on our website and of course one of our hair replacement specialists can help you personally at the Salon.  Moisture on the ends is important to keep your fresh new look lasting through your wear time. Use products that contain zero or low alcohol and stay away from oil shine products.

Q: Can I comb or brush my hair extensions?

A: Yes, you should comb the ends of your hair in the shower while conditioning.  Brushing should be done at least twice a day with a soft bristle hair extension approved brush to remove all dead hair. We sell these at our salon location or you may purchase these at our online store.

General Questions

Q: You offer so many methods, how do I know the right hair extension and or Hair Replacement for me?

A: We work with hair replacements and extensions every day so, when you walk in the door rest assured we can guide you in the right direction on what would be the best method for you. We offer a complimentary consultation which will last between 20-30 minutes to talk about what would be the best option for your desired look. There is never any pressure to make appointments, we really want you to be comfortable with your decision and understand it can be a large investment.

Q: How much do hair Extensions and or Hair Replacements cost?

A: You can expect anywhere from $100-$3000 just depending on the amount of hair and the application method that is needed. Hair Extensions, depending on how much you need, the method in which they are attached and the type or grade of hair that you use can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars and that does not include the maintenance that you will need every 4 to 8 weeks. You also need to dedicate about 30 minutes- 2 hours for the initial installation. Hair extensions are an investment not only in the purchase but in the amount of time that you will need to spend at home and in salon with maintenance.

Again, we offer so many different types of extensions here at Enhanced; it’s hard to say how much one extension method would cost. Our prices are up for you to view so, depending on how much hair you would need and the method that you are using would determine your final price. If this seems too confusing we do offer complimentary consultations where we will go over a variety of hair types and installation methods.

Q: How long should my hair be before I can receive Hair Extensions?

A: Depending on what look you are trying to achieve, your hair can vary in length when receiving hair extensions. The shorter that your hair is, the more extensions you will need to create a natural look or you may need an integration hair piece until very short pieces of your natural hair grow out.  We do suggest a complimentary consultation to decide what will be the best option for you, or if your comfortable we can do one via Skype.  It is advisable to have at least 3 inches for a successful result.  There are many types of methods that we will have to use in order to obtain a great look. Although the extent of your transformation may be limited if your hair is very short.

Q: How are Hair Extensions applied?

A: As we offer many different types of hair extensions, the application methods vary. For Seamless extensions, they are applied with a special medical grade tape adhesive that is made specifically for your hair. These extensions will have a front and a back “tab” in which your hair will be sandwiched in between.

For pre-tipped bonded hair extensions the hair will be sectioned into small sections and then the bond will be heated with a thermal molding tool and rolled into your hair. For the Fusion hair extensions the application is very similar except we will create our own bond for the hair. These are our most popular application methods.

Q: How are Hair Extensions removed?

A: The hair extensions are safely removed by one of our hair extension professionals. We use a special hair removal spray that is catered towards the type of extensions that you are wearing. This removal spray will break down the adhesive or bonding material. At this point we will either break down the bonding material with a flat head tool or for the seamless they will peel apart and we will comb out any remaining residue.

Q: In what condition will my own hair be after the hair extensions are removed?

A: You’ll find that the integrity of your hair will just be just like it was before the extensions were put in. There are no adverse effects however, if you were losing your hair prior to getting extensions, the hair extensions or hair replacement unit will not stop the loss of your hair. If you are concerned with being allergic to any of the bonding agents that we use to attach the extensions, we do offer test strands for a set amount to try the hair beforehand.  Receiving regular maintenance appointments are very important. In most cases the hair has just grown out and is longer.  Keep in mind that you have not had an actual haircut for six months so you may have split ends at the removal of hair extensions.

Q: How long does an application of Hair Extensions or Hair Replacement take?

A: This would depend on the application method that you may need. Some services may take only 10 minutes while others may take up to three hours. We have individual televisions, WiFi, magazines and a fully stocked snack bar to help pass the time. You can also order a delicious lunch from our Day Spa Menu.

Q: Can Hair Extensions be reused?

A: There are some applications that cannot be reused but most of our extensions can be.  For example, Hairdreams Special hair extensions can be sent back to the hair company to be re-tipped. During this process they will attach a new bond to each extension. This will shorten the hair about an inch so it is preferably only done on longer hair. It takes 6 to 8 weeks for them to be returned from the Hairdreams Factory in Ukraine.  Seamless hair extensions can be reused for up to a year as long as they are properly taken care of and receive maintenance in the salon.  Mega hair can be reused. Most other extensions will not be able to be reused once they are removed from your hair. Hair Replacement units are reusable and normally last a little over a year.

Q: Will Hair Extensions damage my own hair or make me go bald?

A: Prior to receiving the hair extensions, during your consultation we always do a pull test to see if you are losing your hair.  Extensions will not stop the loss of your hair. We can disguise hair loss. However, we cannot make hair grow back in. This can only be done by a doctor by implantation. Your hair extensions will be applied by a Professional. The integrity of your hair will remain the same as long as you follow our instructions on how to take care of your extensions. We love the hair extensions and wear them ourselves so we want the most beautiful quality and the longest lasting hair that money can buy.  We always want ourselves and our clients to look natural and beautiful. We do suggest a blend haircut to be done after your extension application. This will ensure that you will have the most natural and disguised look.

Q: Will it be obvious to other people that I am wearing hair extensions?

A: Hair extensions are a partnership so it will be advisable for you to be able to take care of your own hair when you are at home. We offer a styling class to teach you how to disguise your hair extensions. For the most part, hair extensions are not detectable.  If your hair is very short you may have a little more difficulty disguising however, it is obtainable. The color of the extensions will be matched to the same shade of your own hair.  Extensions are applied behind your hairline and away from your natural part line. The extensions are cut after the application to blend in with your own creative hairstyle of choice. Some extensions are less visible and more undetectable than others. Choosing the right color and texture is very important along with the right application. They will be very discreet so that you will know they are there but no one else will be able to tell.

Q: Will my significant other be able to feel them?

A: Yes, if your significant other has their hands in your hair they will be able to feel them. However, if someone lightly pats your head or touches your hair, they would be undetectable.

Q: How long do Hair Extensions typically last?

A: Depending on the method, Hair extensions can last up to six months. It is important to follow the aftercare advice and to make regular maintenance appointments every 4 to 6 weeks. This will ensure that your ravishing locks will stay as beautiful as possible!

Each person is different depending on climate, water, products used, care for the hair, brushing, using blow-dryers and hot irons, how it was applied, swimming, sweating, hair growth, how often you wash your hair, etc.  Extensions can last for many months or can be quickly and easily ruined if not cared for properly.

Q: Will my own hair still grow as I'm wearing the hair extensions?

A: Yes! The continued growth of the hair is one of the reasons you will need to have maintenance checkups regularly. These maintenance appointments are designed to avoid the extra pressure and the pulling of your hair that can cause Extensions to grow farther away from the scalp.

Q: Will Extensions damage my natural hair?

A:  Please always go to an Extension Specialist who has experience and that has been in the field for years. Damage can be caused by inexperienced placement. For example, Strand by Strand extensions should not be placed on the baby fine hair at the nape area.

There are several types of extension methods available today. Track gluing or track sewing, does not allow the scalp to breathe. This method causes “bad things” to happen under the glued or sewn in tracks. The famous “Strand-by-Strand” method or the Seamless method will not cause damage when applied and cared for properly. The “Strand by Strand” method allows the scalp to breathe as the extensions are placed “strand by strand” not glued to the scalp like other cheaper methods of hair extension applications.

Q: What are the different types of hair extensions?

A: There are many popular ways to apply extensions. There are many variations to all of these techniques and different stylists call these by different names such as, Fusion, Strand by Strand, Bonding, braiding, seamless, weaving, clips, micro links and many more.

Q: Do you offer Extensions for African-American hair texture?

A: Absolutely! The hair is available in several textures to suit your individual style. Please refer to Seamless hair, So Cap, Cinderella and Megahair, FAQ and all about hair section.

Q: Can I color or highlight my hair after receiving hair extensions?

A: Absolutely! At Enhanced we are trained to take care of all of your hair coloring needs.   This includes highlights, color, root retouches, toners and more. As far as coloring on top of the hair extensions, you may deposit color but not lift color. This means that you cannot lighten the hair with lightening powders or highlights. You may highlight your natural hair around or in between the hair extensions but not the bond or the extension hair. Lightening the extension hair can cause major damage to the quality of the hair and could cause the extension to slip from your hair. We cannot guarantee your hair extension hair if it has been lightened.

Hair extensions come in an array of different colors so coloring your hair is normally not necessary. Sometimes we may need to add a hue to the hair to get it perfectly matched. But because the hair has been processed and sterilized we do not advise doing any more chemical treatments on it as it can be easily ruined or not come out the color that you want. If you decide to color your hair against our recommendations please always use semi-permanent color, never permanent.

It is recommended to get a fresh color before your extension service. Since the bonds are placed 1/3 inch away from the scalp, they do not interfere with the natural hair growth. With caution, the highlighting material will not damage the bonds. Be sure to pick up your hair extension shampoo and brush to make sure you’re able to care properly for your new hair.  We offer hair coloring, extensions blending cuts and all hair services provided by Stylists with extensive training and experience with extensions. It is best to make your appointments at the same time.

Q: Can I get a Brazilian Blowout with hair extensions?

A: Absolutely! We highly recommend having a Brazilian Blowout on your extension hair to lock in the quality of the hair, to add shine and to reduce any frizz!  A Brazilian blowout is also helpful to enhance the quality of your own hair. This service is great for all hair types including curly, frizzy, ethnic, wavy, color treated, highlighted, or dull hair. This can be applied all over the hair extensions but it is recommended that if done on seamless hair extensions that they are removed from the hair first. As always please take caution when using the flat iron keeping it at a temperature that  is safe for the hair. Always have treatments done by an experienced stylist that is familiar with hair extensions.

Q: Can I get a relaxer?

A: Yes, you can receive relaxers. If you need a full relaxer we would recommend having that process done before you have your extensions installed. The relaxer retouch may be done at the top of your extensions, where the bonds are not placed, underneath your hair extensions and at your temples. We do provide relaxer services in our Salon and we do recommend having a stylist who is trained with working with hair extensions to do this service.

Q: Can I shampoo, brush, blow dry and curl/straighten the Extension hair?

A: Absolutely! You should treat the hair like your own natural hair. When brushing your hair, start from the bottom and work your way up, while holding the root area- to keep it from stretching or aggravating the hair root. All heat appliances may be used, taking caution not to over heat the bonded area.

Q: Why would my hair stylist tell me that I shouldn't get Hair Extensions?

A: Every hair designer has their own technique, their own opinion and their own experiences.  We have personally used and applied hair extensions for over 15 years. Our advice is to always work with someone who actually wears extensions, as they will understand how it feels to have extensions and thin hair. When Modern Enhancement Hair Extension Studio was opened in 1998 there wasn’t anyone else providing extensions in North Carolina much less in Raleigh. Now, salon’s offering extensions are popping up everywhere, after sending one of their employees to a 2 day class.  Most also charge you well over $3000.00, using you as a learning tool  and taking more than 6 hours to apply your new hair.

Our recommendation, is to go with who you are most comfortable with. Take your time!  Research Hair Extensions for yourself.  Look at client ‘before and after” portfolios- look for real everyday people, not models. Get a few consultations from different salons! Get client references!  Don’t let anyone practice on you! We have clients that have been with us for a very long time that would be more then happy to talk about our quality of work and what hair extensions have done for them. Check out the testimonial page.
